# Tote bag print size: design sizes in inches, centimetres and pixels

Tote bag design sizes for a standard cotton tote (front or back, an upright design, all-over print) in inches, centimetres and pixels at 300 DPI, compiled from printers' published print areas, with how to measure your own bag and set up the file.

**A standard tote bag's design is usually about 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm), which is 3000 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI, centred on a bag of about 15 × 16 in (38.1 × 40.6 cm). For a design taller than it is wide, 9 × 12 in (22.9 × 30.5 cm) (2700 × 3600 pixels) fits most of them; an all-over print covers the whole face, about 15 × 15 in (38.1 × 38.1 cm).** Make the file at 300 DPI at the size it will be printed: its width and height in inches times 300 are its pixels.

There is no single standard. Totes come in many sizes, and every printer has its own print area; the sizes below are what printers publish, checked against several of them (listed at the end). Your printer's own print area, and your own bag, always win.

## Tote bag design sizes

| Placement | Design size | Pixels at 300 DPI | Printers publish | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front (or back) | 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) | 3000 × 3000 pixels | 6.5–12 in (16.5–30.5 cm) wide | Centred on the panel, clear of the handles and the bottom seam |
| Upright front | 9 × 12 in (22.9 × 30.5 cm) | 2700 × 3600 pixels | 9–12 in (22.9–30.5 cm) wide | Centred, for a design taller than it is wide |
| All-over print | 15 × 15 in (38.1 × 38.1 cm) | 4500 × 4500 pixels | 13–18 in (33–45.7 cm) wide | The whole face of the bag, edge to edge (cut-and-sew all-over print totes) |

The design size is the box the artwork fits in, not the bag. "Printers publish" is the range of widths the printers listed at the end give for it. One of them, Bonfire, prints a smaller area, 6.5 × 7.7 inches, which is the low end of that range.

## Tote bag print area

A tote is the simplest product to print: a flat panel on each side, with no collar, sleeves or pocket in the way. What limits the print is the bag's own edges:

- **The handles** are stitched to the top of the panel. The press has to clear them, so the print starts a little below the top hem.
- **The side and bottom seams** fold the fabric. A print that runs into them is uneven, so the design stays clear of them.
- **The bag's size.** On bags of about 15 × 16 in (38.1 × 40.6 cm), 4over4 and Prime Line print 9 inches wide; other printers publish up to 12. A larger bag takes a larger print.

Measure the flat panel of the bag you sell, leave a margin from the seams and the handles, and use the smaller of that and your printer's or press's limit. Both sides of a tote can be printed, each with its own design and its own file, usually at the same size.

## All-over print totes

An all-over print tote is printed before it is sewn, so the design covers the whole face of the bag, edge to edge: about 15 × 15 in (38.1 × 38.1 cm) (4500 × 4500 pixels at 300 DPI) for a square bag. Use the printer's own template for it: the edges are cut and sewn, so keep text and faces away from them.

## What DPI should a tote bag design be?

**300 DPI at the printed size.** The pixels follow from the size:

**pixels = inches × 300**, or **centimetres ÷ 2.54 × 300**

150 DPI is the lowest that still looks sharp at a normal viewing distance. To see how large an image you already have can print, use the [image print size calculator](/tools/print-size/).

## How to set up a tote bag design file

1. **Measure the bag’s panel.** Lay the bag flat and measure the panel between the side seams, and from below the handles to above the bottom seam. Ask your printer for its largest print area.
2. **Choose the design size.** Take the size within that area: 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) for a standard front, 9 × 12 in (22.9 × 30.5 cm) for an upright design.
3. **Work out the pixels.** Multiply the inches by 300, or divide the centimetres by 2.54 and multiply by 300: 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) is 3000 × 3000 pixels.
4. **Make the canvas that size.** Create the document at those pixels, or in inches at 300 pixels per inch, before you start.
5. **Export a PNG with a transparent background.** Keep the background transparent so that only the design is printed, one file for each printed side.

For the file itself (format, transparency and colour), see [print-ready t-shirt files](/guides/print-ready-t-shirt-files/): a tote's file is made the same way, and DTG and DTF both print on cotton canvas.

## When customers design the tote in your shop

[PrintBlob](/) prints on its bundled t-shirt. [PrintBlob Pro](/docs/pro/) adds your own products on your own photos, a tote bag among them: you photograph the bag, draw the print area on the photo for its front and, if you print it, its back, and enter each side's real print size. While a customer places an image the designer shows its resolution at that size and warns below 150 DPI. When the design is added to the cart, each printed side becomes a transparent PNG at 300 DPI at exactly that size, so a 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) front arrives as 3000 × 3000 pixels. Pro is $69 a year or $99 once (limited-time offer until 31 December 2026) ([Free and Pro compared](/pricing/)). Setting up a tote next to your t-shirts is in [sell custom hoodies, mugs, tote bags and caps](/guides/custom-hoodies-mugs-tote-bags-caps-woocommerce/), and measuring a print area and entering it in [print areas and print sizes](/guides/print-area-sizes-by-product/).

## Questions about tote bag print sizes

### What size should a tote bag design be?

About 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) on a standard tote, 3000 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI. Printers publish tote designs 6.5–12 in (16.5–30.5 cm) wide, depending on the bag.

### What is the tote bag print size in pixels?

At 300 DPI: 3000 × 3000 pixels for a 10 × 10 in (25.4 × 25.4 cm) front, 2700 × 3600 pixels for a 9 × 12 in (22.9 × 30.5 cm) upright design and 4500 × 4500 pixels for a 15 × 15 in (38.1 × 38.1 cm) all-over print.

### What is the print area of a tote bag?

The flat panel of the bag, less a margin from the handles at the top and the seams at the sides and bottom. Measure your own bag and use the smaller of that and your printer’s largest print.

### Can both sides of a tote bag be printed?

Yes. Each side is printed on its own, with its own design and its own file, usually at the same size.

### What size is an all-over print tote design?

The whole face of the bag, about 15 × 15 in (38.1 × 38.1 cm) on a square bag, 4500 × 4500 pixels at 300 DPI. Use the printer’s template, which follows the bag’s cut edges.
