Mug design size: 11 oz and 15 oz sublimation template sizes in inches, centimetres and pixels
The print size of an 11 oz and a 15 oz mug's full wrap in inches, centimetres and pixels at 300 DPI, compiled from printers' and blank makers' published print areas, with where the wrap goes round the handle, how big each side of a two-sided print is, and how to set up the file.
Published , updated , by the PrintBlob team.
An 11 oz mug’s full-wrap design is about 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm), which is 2550 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI. A 15 oz mug is taller, so its wrap is about 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm), 2550 × 1200 pixels. The width runs round the mug and stops short of the handle; the height runs up the side, a little short of the rim and the base.
There is no single standard. Every mug blank, press and printer has its own wrap, and the sizes below are what printers and blank makers publish, checked against several of them (listed at the end). Your printer’s or blank’s own template always wins: use it for the final file.
Mug design sizes
| Placement | Design size | Pixels at 300 DPI | Printers publish | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 oz mug, full wrap | 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm) | 2550 × 1050 pixels | 7.9–9.1 in (20.1–23.1 cm) wide | Round the mug, centred opposite the handle |
| 15 oz mug, full wrap | 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm) | 2550 × 1200 pixels | 8–9 in (20.3–22.9 cm) wide | Round the mug, centred opposite the handle |
“Printers publish” is the range of wrap widths the printers and blank makers listed at the end give for that mug. The heights they give vary too, from 3 to 3.8 inches for an 11 oz mug and from 3.5 to 4.3 inches for a 15 oz one, because each leaves its own margin at the rim and the base.
- The full wrap: 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm), centred opposite the handle.
- The gap at the handle: about 1.6 in (4.1 cm) that the wrap leaves unprinted where the handle joins the mug.
- A two-sided print: one design centred on each half of the wrap, 4.25 × 3.5 in (10.8 × 8.9 cm) each, either side of the handle.
11 oz mug sublimation template size
The standard 11 oz white mug is about 3.8 in (9.7 cm) tall and 3.2 in (8.1 cm) across, so it is about 10.1 in (25.7 cm) round. The print does not go all the way round: the wrap is about 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm), 2550 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI, which leaves about 1.6 in (4.1 cm) unprinted where the handle joins the mug. The widths printers publish run 7.9–9.1 in (20.1–23.1 cm) wide.
Make the design at the full wrap size even if it only covers part of the mug, and place it where you want it on the wrap: the middle of the wrap is the side opposite the handle.
15 oz mug print size
A 15 oz mug is about the same width round as an 11 oz one but taller, so its wrap is about the same width and taller: 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm), 2550 × 1200 pixels at 300 DPI. Printers publish widths of 8–9 in (20.3–22.9 cm) wide. A design made for an 11 oz mug fits a 15 oz one with space above and below it; going the other way, a 15 oz design has to be scaled down or cropped.
Mugs of other sizes (10 oz, 12 oz, 20 oz) and tapered latte mugs differ more from one blank to the next, and a tapered mug’s flat design is curved to fit the cone. For those, use the template of the exact blank.
One side or two sides of a mug
Many mugs carry one design on each side of the handle, centred on the front and the back. Each side then has half the wrap, about 4.25 × 3.5 in (10.8 × 8.9 cm) (1275 × 1050 pixels) on an 11 oz mug, and each design is centred on its half. A single design on one face is smaller still: 4over4 gives about 4 × 3.5 inches for it. Most printers publish only the wrap, so place a one-sided design on a full-wrap file.
Either way, keep the artwork away from the handle. Cricut asks for at least half an inch between the design and the handle, and some blank suppliers more. Some printers also want a little bleed above and below the wrap; the template says how much.
What DPI should a mug design be?
300 DPI at the printed size. The pixels follow from the size:
pixels = inches × 300, or centimetres ÷ 2.54 × 300
150 DPI is the lowest that still looks sharp at a normal viewing distance. To see how large an image you already have can print, use the image print size calculator.
How to set up a mug design file
- Get the template for your mug. Download the template of the exact blank or printer you use, or measure the printable band round your mug, leaving the gap at the handle.
- Make the canvas the size of the wrap. Set the document to the wrap’s size at 300 DPI: 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm) is 2550 × 1050 pixels for an 11 oz mug, 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm) is 2550 × 1200 pixels for a 15 oz one.
- Place the design. The middle of the wrap faces away from the handle. For a design on each side, centre one on each half of the wrap, and keep everything clear of the ends.
- Add the bleed the template asks for. Where the printer wants bleed above and below the wrap, extend the background into it so that no white edge shows.
- Export at the full size. Export the whole wrap as one image at the full size, and print a test mug before you take orders.
When customers design the mug in your shop
PrintBlob prints on its bundled t-shirt. PrintBlob Pro adds your own products on your own photos, a mug among them: you photograph the mug, draw the print area on the photo and enter its real print size, for one side or for a front and a back either side of the handle. While a customer places an image the designer shows its resolution at that size and warns below 150 DPI. When the design is added to the cart, each printed side becomes a transparent PNG at 300 DPI at exactly that side’s print size, so a side set to 4.25 × 3.5 in (10.8 × 8.9 cm) arrives as 1275 × 1050 pixels.
PrintBlob makes no sublimation wrap template: it does not lay the sides out on a mug-sized sheet, mirror them or add bleed. You place each side’s file on your own template, as you would a file a customer emailed. Pro is $69 a year or $99 once (limited-time offer until 31 December 2026) (Free and Pro compared). Setting up a mug next to your t-shirts is in sell custom hoodies, mugs, tote bags and caps, and measuring a print area and entering it in print areas and print sizes. How a mug order goes from the product page to your sublimation template is in a mug printing business, and sublimating shirts as well in sublimation shirt design size.
Questions about mug design sizes
What size is an 11 oz mug design?
About 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm) for the full wrap, 2550 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI. Printers publish 11 oz wraps 7.9–9.1 in (20.1–23.1 cm) wide, so use your blank’s own template for the final file.
What is the mug sublimation template size in pixels?
At 300 DPI, 2550 × 1050 pixels for an 11 oz mug’s wrap of 8.5 × 3.5 in (21.6 × 8.9 cm), and 2550 × 1200 pixels for a 15 oz mug’s wrap of 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm).
What size is a 15 oz mug print?
About 8.5 × 4 in (21.6 × 10.2 cm), 2550 × 1200 pixels at 300 DPI: about as wide round as an 11 oz mug’s wrap, and taller. Printers publish 15 oz wraps 8–9 in (20.3–22.9 cm) wide.
Why is a mug wrap shorter than the way round the mug?
The handle. The print stops short of it on both sides, so the wrap leaves a gap where the handle joins the mug, and the middle of the wrap is the side facing away from the handle.
How big is each side of a two-sided mug print?
Half the wrap: about 4.25 × 3.5 in (10.8 × 8.9 cm), 1275 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI, on an 11 oz mug, with each design centred on its half.
What DPI should a mug design be?
300 DPI at the size it is printed. 150 DPI is the lowest that still looks sharp at a normal viewing distance.
